WESLEY SCHULZ | NOTES FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: A Fifth of Tchaikovsky, and a lot more, for our 40th birthday party - MICHAEL C. MOORE, Kitsap Sun
On
a November weekend, music to evoke 'Summer Nights' - MICHAEL
C. MOORE, Kitsap Sun
One of Tchaikovsky’s most endearing gifts was
his penchant for melody. His Fifth Symphony is a virtual bounty of intoxicating
themes including the second movement’s famous melody for French Horn. Berlioz’s
six songs for mezzo soprano, Les nuits
d’ete (Summer Nights), radiate
tenderness, sensuality, and like Tchaikovsky, gives voice to inspired melodies.
Aaron Copland’s Outdoor Overture
opens the program with spirited brass playing an invigorating rhythm. This work
provides the perfect opening to our 40th Anniversary in which we
celebrate the orchestra’s vitality and contribution to the arts on Bainbridge
Island!
